The Cooperative Development Foundation (CDF) is accepting applications from across North America for the 2027 Cooperative Leaders and Scholars (CLS) Fellowship. Applications are now open and will be accepted through January 11, 2027.

Designed to attract, engage and retain the next generation of cooperative leaders, CLS is an eight-month leadership development program that connects emerging cooperators across industries, sectors and geographic regions. Through immersive learning experiences, professional development, mentorship and networking opportunities, Fellows deepen their understanding of the cooperative business model while building relationships that can support their careers and strengthen the broader cooperative movement.

“CLS was created to invest in the people who will shape our cooperative future,” said Kirstie Boyette, CDF Deputy Director. “By bringing together emerging leaders from across cooperative sectors, we’re helping them build the knowledge, relationships and networks they need to strengthen their organizations, communities and the broader cooperative economy.”

Who Should Apply?

CLS welcomes individuals who are passionate about cooperatives and interested in developing their leadership skills, expanding their professional networks, and contributing to a stronger cooperative movement.

Applicants must live in North America and be pursuing a career in, working with or studying cooperatives (including credit unions and mutual insurance). Eligible applicants must meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • emerging cooperative leaders between the ages of 18 and 35
  • individuals who are new to cooperatives, with fewer than five years of experience in cooperative work
  • current post-secondary students of any age with an interest in cooperatives

Applicants do not need to be employed by a cooperative to participate. Individuals working in cooperative development, education, technical assistance and other organizations that support cooperatives are also encouraged to apply.
